Capitalist arrogance

"Food inflation in Canada is the highest it's been in 27 years, and most of the food retailers in Canada and around the world are showing pretty good (first-quarter results) - that's not a coincidence," Loblaw president and deputy chairman Alan Leighton said in a conference call with analysts.

http://ca.news.finance.yahoo.com/s/05052009/2/biz-finance-higher-food-prices-give-supermarket-chain-loblaw-73.html

Virtual Monopolies and collusion among the few as is the case with the grocery industry, produces predictable results. Banking, Oil, and Grocery clearly show the abuse by Capitalists and their political agents.

Big Brother says, "that's not a coincidence".

The People's Revolution must begin by first acknowledging the yoke, then making conscious efforts to shun it. Endlessly repeating the same tired old phrases changes nothing.

You said it, Comrade. The sticking point is that most have not yet recognized the yoke, and that most couldn't shun it if they tried. Ya gotta buy food somewhere, cars and similar internal-combustion engines are as essential as horses and buggies were in their day but don't run on anything you can grow yourself. That is the whole point and beauty of corporate monopolies and cartels: the lever used against Captain Boycott can't be applied effectively if there are no alternative sources.

Kind of leaves government as the protector of the common weal - if it can be snatched out of the corporate clutches by a democratic revolution and bent to its real purpose.

I acknowledge public debt from unconstrained socialism combined with government corruption will put future generations under a yoke too heavy. It's an oncoming syndrome already labeled 'up yours'.

We can empower the public with our own economic call. Most middle class understand job loses is a lagging indicator in an economic downturn. The idea promoted that employment increases is also a lagging indicator simply isn`t the case. This isn`t about banks or cars or even GDP related exports like oil, it`s about jobs, jobs and the people that work at them.

I say we call it here and now and declare employment gains is a leading indicator and the only indicator we the people will recognize as a recovery indicator.

Phone your brokers and tell them to factor in jobs for any investment on recovery hopes and in future refer to this indicator as included with interest rates, currency, libor etc as Jobs 3,,, up or down.

The economy will tell the people about recovery through Jobs 3 and that will tell the government when the economy recovers and not government telling us.

    Power to the people.

There are a few farmers markets that price reflect the elimination of middle layers between producers and consumers.
The small business is the largest employer and I know it`s handy to one stop shop but the viability of our economy long term is small business. Most streets are lined with small shops mostly self employed proprietorships. They know their neigbours and often share similar view of business, a life style.
For the past year I have studied a local small business involved in the production of beef jerky using a recipe from the salt only days before preservatives, which is not an easy task. I have designed a commercial system capable of perfect result from a total novice on the first try. The optimum size fits a family or M+P op. to a second income for a single earner family.
The message, support your local small business, that new local product jerky you`re chewing on could be paying, for the third time, my non-custodial parent tax...

Is U.S. Hyperinflation a Real Possibility?
    By Anand Chokkavelu
    April 23, 2009

But inflation of the triple-digit variety is a doomsday case that would require a massive devaluation of the U.S. dollar, and a weakening of the U.S. economy on a scale much larger than even what we're seeing now. In short, the world would have to completely distrust the U.S.'s future earning power for hyperinflation to occur.

Do you honestly believe that Bill Gates is going to give $1000 to you, and everyone to whom you send 'his' email?

Maybe the evil chain letter leprechauns will come into my house and sodomise me in my sleep for not continuing a chain letter that was started by St. Peter in 5 A.D., and brought to this country by midget pilgrims stowaways on the Endeavour.

    F!$^ 'em!

If you're going to forward something, at least send me something mildly amusing.

I've seen all the 'send this to 10 of your closest friends, and this poor, wretched excuse for a human being will somehow receive a nickel from some omniscient being' forwards about 90 times. I don't bloody care.

Show a little intelligence and think about what you're actually contributing to by sending out these forwards. Chances are, it's our own unpopularity.

    The point being?

If you get some chain letter that's threatening to leave you sexless or luckless for the rest of your life, delete it.

If it's funny, send it on.

Don't piss people off by making them feel guilty about a leper in Botswana with no teeth who has been tied to the arse of a dead elephant for 27 years and whose only salvation is the 5 cents per letter he'll receive if you forward this email.

Now forward this to everyone you know. Otherwise, tomorrow morning your underwear will turn carnivorous and will consume your genitals.

I'm finding it interesting how the majority of the neoclassicals are dismissing Krugman's May 3/09 article. Some of them are insulting in their blog entries. This is the time for discussion and debate.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/04/opinion/04krugman.html

When I first read his entry I felt hinky about his process because it doesn't really follow what is generally understood. But then my mind kept going to the 'paradox of thrift' Krugman mentioned and the SRAS curve.

If you look to Why people are saving then you'd have to delve into the psychology of consumers. Last summer consumers experienced a supply shock in fuel but food prices remained relatively stable. Some people could hardly afford the gas to drive to work or being employed was too expensive (outlay in fuel was greater than wages) which meant further debt in order keep their jobs and, fingers crossed, things would get better. Which they had, fuel prices had dropped and there's a new president in government.

If wages are presently dropping then people would need a cushion to offset the next supply shock wouldn't they? From what I've been reading in the comments sections of various blogs property taxes have gone up double digit percentages. Next it will be gas and food prices that will be increasing. They want to avoid deflation so a controlled inflation must be 'arranged'.

Consumers won't spend more by loosening credit if they're already mired in debt. If consumers and privates aren't spending then shouldn't government step in?? By stepping in I don't mean cutting taxes as a means of loosening money supply. Cutting taxes hasn't been working and won't work.

What is going on now is good for banks or politics but en masse very damaging to the Plebs. The line between middle and lower class wages have become more blurrier. What will happen when people realize that there are only two classes? And since the population is greater in the lower and they're the ones that are having to pay for the lifestyles of the higher?

Hope the person behind the curtain is as efficient at distributing the prozac as manipulating the markets.

Look after that leg of yours Charles.

    Peace dudes.

  9. Charles,

look at the bright side: at least you now what's eating away at you. The rest of us are still trying to figure out what is causing our discomfort.

    Dee,

the whole economic system is based on consumption. Those who make money producing do so in the expectation that their product will be bought, or "consumed". Altruism being in short supply, very few things that are produced are offered for free, so no means of purchase (i.e. money), no consumption, and no production.

The gentlemen adventurers manipulating the Great God Marketplace forgot that it indeed is a vicious circle. They can move production to cheap labour areas to reduce costs and increase profits, but that breaks the circle: money not put into circulation as wages is not available to consume the products produced. No problem for many of the producers: they make their "hay" while the sun shines, and could care less about the economic deluge (or Tsunami, to use the current phrase) that is bound to follow.

Role of governments, Dee? To continue to support the corporate mob that puts and keeps them in office until another government set promises to do so more effectively. There isn't a government in the world I know of that acts solely for the common weal instead of for that of its enablers. Remember, governments are putting the means of purchase - money - into the hands of consumers only after that money has gone through the hands of producers to trickle down to those expected to keep give renewed impetus to the vicious circle.

We are so screwed because it will work, just not very well for most of us.

  10. "Cutting taxes hasn't been working and won't work."

Without the previous decades of waste, corruption and little or no work done to warrant the tax increases we wouldn`t even need consider a decrease.

Unfortunately the ability for the common sense of the many to influence the electability of the single minded has been crushed under the tax increases which will now be used to prop up this limited use of the peoples money.

You are quite correct Dee, tax cuts won`t work as a fix in the long term because public debt is climbing faster than room to cut taxes without cutting the stability of governments.

Herb addresses the root issue that jobs and consumer spending goes hand in hand. The majority of the world knows that employment is the fix. As Biden said "this election is all about jobs" and it won the WH.

Charles has brought it to our attention, all in timely fashion how this is a global problem. The current crop of consumers is already under saved, over spent and over mortgaged. Without some catastrophic correction this is a structural problem created by globalism and cheap money and so as Dee notes won`t be cured by handing out a few extra loaves of bread.

The only solution short of a catastrophic change undoubtedly leading to WW3 is to create new consumers through new jobs giving stability to the current global economic base.

With this I will unabashedly promote a global adventure capably of not only saving the economy but the environment as well.

A global transportation makeover transiting (pun intended) away from internal combustion, pavement and gridlock with a individual vehicle mag lift tube style transportation system.

Perhaps some brave sole will somewhere pick up that old copy of Role of Government, and check the section on employment factors.

  14. BC provincial election winds up tonight. Nothing interesting, construction, forestry and even our historic industry, mining, will look at bleak years ahead regardless of who wins.

But first todays big economic news, the WH announces the stimulus will create 750,000 jobs by August. ok,,, that was it.

James had a little fire when she agreed with Campbell that is was a big job,,, all because Campbell made such a huge mess. I thought that the election highlight.
It seems the NDP condemnation of the carbon tax might cost her the economic election advantage. The oddest highlight was the banks get most of the carbon tax yet the NDP seems reluctant to expose this scam Carole Taylor exposed as she resigned as the MoF. Even odder the presstitutes had one 15 second segment on this muliti billion dollar scam. As we are witnessing federally once the government becomes too corrupt to function the carpet baggers move in. Air Bus. Adscam. 0 down 40 year mortgage. Gun registry. IT and even the BC carbon tax `filtering` money to shareholders of the banks, and all the minor abuses of power that has trickled down over the decades.

BTW Ms James talks integrity and in the same conversation talks about giving kids the best start when in fact she is the primary influence in BC for replacing family with daycare. Hard to imagine how much integrity a habitual liar has, or how sane a person is that believes the gang capital of the world wasn`t part of her creation.

disgusting to deny it, insane to create it.

The most recent is the bank bailouts. As I recall the banks are a commercial enterprise making money from the users, you and me. Why are we paying the banks so they can make money off from business the make money from, when did banks become eligible for using our public welfare safety net???

Trudeau set things in motion by eliminated common law with the charter of rights. The final blow was Mulroney turning the federal government completly rogue by ignoring the foundation of our nation and imposed an illegal tax on the people.

Now it`s setting a national standard for UI, we are only talking about it because the system has failed. Where is the economic plan I told Garth a year ago the Libs needed to win the next election?

The GreenST is just as phoney as axe the tax and the Obama jobs jobs jobs is.

I can see how you would be upset with Dion trying to sell the following as a good deal for Cdns.

1; The administration costs which would have been very large was never done.

2; The numbers used were from a previous Harper budget and some of those were a year old in the that budget.

3; All taxes collected would go into general revenue and not green projects.

4; Even though the economy was crumbling the Liberals ignored the falling revenue that would not be there for the rebate even after collecting the full Green Tax amount.

Obviously the GreenST was a diversion till the economy collapsed giving the Libs a political advantage. If the Dems could blow off concerns about freddie and fannie and water boarding for a political advantage I really don`t understand why you can`t see the Libs blowing off our collapsing economy for an election advantage.
We all knew our economy was in big trouble in 2007 yet here we are talking about a new tax and new UI regulations.

Can you agree with this? We have a major problem, it`called a failed system of elected federal governance. Until that changes things will continue to get a lot worse than they should be.

The federal government is in power to protect the citizens from foreign or domestic abuse which includes corporate piracy. In all counts they have failed for decades. In addition The SCoC ruled fathers have no rights right after Trudeau created the so call individual bill of rights. Mulroney then blew our confederation out the window with an illegal tax and that was the end of the rule of law and any trace of government accountability. The system is broken and not even the stanch defender of the corrupt, Herb, can tell us what the federal government has done right over the last 40 years.

lol, vent??? The last several decades are filled with scams schemes thefts and outright fraud perpetrated by our federal government. If you want to live in denial that`s your choice Dee but I doubt you`ll convince any to join you if you pronounce the facts as venting.

Sry Dee but until we change this failed system things will continue to get worse, that`s not venting, just a fact.

  23. There is an issue that perhaps we can use to clarify the governments position.

In 1990 Parliament unanimously passed a motion to end child poverty by 2000. It was worse in 2000 and will be worse in 2010. Not only have no politicians or political parties offered an explanation or even a `promise` to look into why they f***ked up so many lives they promised to improve they ignore it like the residential school settlement was good enough to appease the peasants.
When the smoke clears you`ll find it was just a political maneuver with no intention of ever even attempting it.

Perhaps the answer lies in the completion. None of them could figure out how to do it and increase their politicians or their party more electable. They simple don`t care unless it works for them but it looks like it is to the point where the real help is going to the none of the above crowd.

Decent weather, STV and yet a record low turnout of voters in BC matching the last record low turnout federally. I don`t think enough will decide none of the above will force needed change so I would rather see the Liberals back in power tipping the west over the edge rather than have economic conditions force the changes required, but either way it`s only a matter of time, denial of the facts won`t change that.

God Created Dog, or The Story of Adam and Eve's Pets

Adam and Eve said, 'Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked with us every day. Now we do not see you any more. We are lonesome here, and it is difficult for us to remember how much you love us.'

And God said, 'I will create a companion for you that will be with you and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me.

'Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourselves.'

And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve. And it was a good animal, and God was pleased. The new animal was pleased to be with Adam and Eve and he wagged his tail.

And Adam said, 'Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal.'

And God said, 'I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG.'

And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved them, and they were comforted. God was pleased, and Dog was content and wagged his tail.

After a while, it came to pass that an angel came to the Lord and said, 'Lord, Adam and Eve have become filled with pride. They strut and preen like peacocks and they believe they are worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught them that they are loved, but perhaps too well.'

And God said, I will create for them a companion who will be with them and who will see them as they are! The companion will remind them of their limitations, so they will know that they are not always worthy of adoration.'

And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam and Eve. And Cat would not obey them. And when Adam and Eve gazed into Cat's eyes, they were reminded that they were not the supreme beings.

And Adam and Eve learned humility. And they were greatly improved.

And God was pleased, Dog was happy,

And Cat didn't really give a shit one way or the other . . .

    Frozen Crabs

A man boarded an airplane in New Orleans with a box of frozen crabs and asked a blonde, female crew member to take care of the box for him. She took the box and promised to put it in the crew's refrigerator.

He pointedly advised her that he was holding her personally responsible for the crabs staying frozen, mentioned that he was a lawyer, and proceeded to rant at her about what would happen if she let them thaw out.

Needless to say, she was annoyed by his behavior. Shortly before landing in New York, she used the intercom to announce to the entire cabin,

"Would the gentleman who gave me the crabs in New Orleans please raise your hand?"

Not one hand went up . . . so she took them home and ate them.

Krugman says U.S. 'depressed economy' could last five years
    Tue May 19, 1:23 AM
    The Associated Press

Krugman said he would not be surprised if the U.S. recession, which began in December 2007, ended in August or September this year. Deteriorating labour markets, however, are likely to continue into 2011, meaning "the period of a depressed economy" could last until 2013 or 2014.

Krugman, who teaches at Princeton University, won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences last year for his analysis of how economies of scale can affect international trade patterns
    _______________________

For almost a year now I`ve said the US economy will start a 5 year recovery starting in the summer of 2009. Recently I`ve updated it to an extended recovery time based on current public debt levels.
note WW3 not factored into predictions

Unless Krugman plagiarized my work from last year I have a difficult time believing the US government was taken by surprise on the extent of the downturn and the employment fallout.

"shutting down 194 coal-fired power plants"

Considering just China has opened that many coal fired plants in the last three years shutting down 194 over the next 6 years can`t possibly be considered a ecological coup. Economically as a competitive move it makes possible global sense on an extended time line based on global re-employment which is the only bit of sense.
Note the last line in the quote below, some official predicts oil prices 6 years out. Even if prices stayed low it would still put more vehicles on the road adding a credibility issue with oil savings predicted and it will do nothing for traffic problems starting with grid lock on the existing and expanding paved corridors.

***As a means increasing employment or avoiding WW3 it rates even lower than any ecological benefit.***

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/05/18/obama-auto-plan-links-auto-emissions-mileage-standards/

    May 19, 2009

The new rules will require a fleet fuel efficiency standard of 35.5 miles per gallon by model year 2016, a big jump from the 2009 model year requirement of 25 mpg. The standards are expected to increase the cost of a vehicle, on average, by $1,300.
A senior administration official said the changes (when compared to current pollution and vehicle use totals) will have the effect of removing 900 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from the air, taking 177 million cars off the road, and shutting down 194 coal-fired power plants.

official predicted that cost would largely be offset by savings in gasoline expenses over the life of the vehicle.

Krugman is in a desperate state of denial on the results of the US plan to spend its way out of this crisis. There are some very meaningful comments illustrating this, link and mine included below.
One wonders how much influence Krugman had in creating spendulous that he is now needs to spin such a worthless defence. Believing hyper-inflation and WW3 isn`t at the end of the path we`re on is an unhealthy symptom of blind bias and not what one should expect from a Nobel Laureate.
Personally I`ve already concluded Krugman must have looked into the future and it scared him into denial. Hopefully there are still enough influential people to recognize massive government spending will only lead to massive government cuts.

This is now, May 28, that was then, May 21.

May 21 K says the dollar will take a significant hit. Some are speculating a hit big enough to cause hyper-inflation and is evidenced by rising commodities and markets hedging against a `significant hit` to the dollar. Devaluing the dollar `significantly is a sure way to inflate away the debt which seems to be the certain path government will follow. The Japan or Canada argument holds no water in comparing those situations and the potential collapse of the US dollar.

Princeton should screen its professors and avoid those that are not true to their profession. “conservative think tanks are short of new ideas”
They certainly are clinging to their guns and religion. I noticed even a few Democrats stuck to the old proven idea that spending as a solution to over spending is a new idea they reject.
The idea that huge deficits will bring consumer spending back to the glory days might be far fetched, odds are 1 in a 100, but failure causing collapse of the dollar is odds on at 100 to 1. Success of deficit spending or Success of inflating away debt, can`t miss. Other than severely pissing off a big part of the world leading to WW3 I don`t see any down side.
We can count on the Democrats to keep coming up with these sure fire ideas.

One's gut feelings, or inner hunches are always right, so listen to and act on them. First link, with part of a para. following: http://tinyurl.com/nkjwnv

"The Bilderberg cabal has become one of the last refuges for the NATO-based conspirators in Europe and the US, the exact same players who ran all the Bretton Woods agreements, the creators of NATO and the UN, the creators of the World Bank and the IMF, these people are in a total panic. . . ."

In this link, ignore the religious BS. There is more to life than religion, especially when this site is quite accurate. The Bilderberg Group, Rothschilds, Rockefellers and others are the NWO. The worldwide downturn has started in earnest, and as it continues to plummet most don't even have a clue what's going on.

The original bombings of the WTC in 1994 (I think), 9-11, bombings in Bali and Bombay, now in AfPak are all being carried out with a single purpose in mind -- to screw the world's economies up so badly, that WW3 will come from this and 2/3 of the global population will be wiped out. -- http://tinyurl.com/pxzbyy

Most of the preceding have one thing in common -- the CIA / Mossad / various intelligence agencies did all this to their own people. They won't stop until they have completed their goal.

Despite their 'supposed' planning, intelligence of thought, etc., they have forgotten one thing. Somewhere in the New Testament, The Christ said something to the effect of ". . . Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword."

Ultimately, the next 10 - 15 years will lead to a really good spring-cleaning of the planet, something that is long overdue. That's the way this was designed to be.

The following link has China PMI falling from 53.5 to 53.1 but that's the good news they say, that has turned commodity markets bullish again. How can we forget only months ago 8% growth was minimum to sustain economic stability in China. The predominate factors start with minimal positive demand indicating hedging against hyper-inflation as well as positioning in the bullets ands body bag industries that need raw resources. It could easily be argued they are the only factors that are driving indices.

On a positive note the Earth will be green again in a couple of million years, providing no humans servive WW3.

Our government can`t solve or even reverse the trend of growing child poverty yet they can bailout all the people that got fat from decades of profits.
I certainly hope everyone got what they voted for, the kids didn`t and they are on deck.

  53. lol, I sent Krugman a link to here but he deleted it and still hasn`t released my comment. Gart used to do that too, hold up a comment till it was buried under several new threads then post it just so he could say he does not moderate different views.

silencing the truth won`t make it go away

TSX surges on brighter economic outlook

Statistics Canada, gross domestic product declined 1.4 per cent in the first quarter. The largest quarterly decrease since 1991.

Avery Shenfeld, chief economist at CIBC World Markets. “And although we're still in recession, the markets are prepared to look past that.”
    ==============

We also can look past that too. Jobs are a lagging indicator of economic decline so lets all look past that.

Poor money managers must be thinking, God just get me through this and I`ll join gamblers anon. Hyper-inflation, WW3, depression or recovery, lots to choose from and the markets are reflecting the flavour of the day. I`m sure I`ve said the trillions sitting idly in cash accounts will find an investment and they wouldn`t be happy sitting on trillions in cash as the US dollar falls, what if.
Well enough on the good news about markets hitting a high note on a "brighter economic outlook". Drop in consumer spending by over spent consumers cause job losses, increase in consumer spending creates jobs but here we are creating jobs ahead of consumer spending, lol, ok it`s all one big spin made out of several more. Distract, dismiss, deny.
Here's a fact that should sound familiar. The trillions sitting in cash accounts will find an investment before hyper-inflation vaporizes it. The chances are high it will be bullets and body bags.

August will be quite the telling month, Charles my friend, enjoy the hot summer, it looks like a long cold winter.

  56. I made a couple of posts over at Krugs place but judging but previous partisan chatter it seems of little value. Thought I`d throw out one more before the bath water.

    Joe

"ok, so they don’t like the stimulus idea?"

I`m not sure why you`re asking as the vast majority of conservative congress voted against it.

"Then what should we do instead? Conservatives have no ideas except to just sit back, do nothing,"

The conservatives voted against it en masse to try and stop the stimulus as it turns into a catastrophe. Obama said Caterpillar would be rehiring and had to recant. He just said Chrysler sales went up as a result of government involvement, media reports sales are up on fire sale prices and interest rates etc. Soon he will have to recant completely on stimulus and I just don`t see how Krugman is going to blame Bush when they all voted against it. History shows one positive result of spending out of a recession and it was mild and already in recovery. Spending to cure an overspending issue is not a plan, it`s a `I hope this shit works` plan.
The conservatives have repeatedly warned you liberals this was going to go awfully wrong. If you won`t admit your totally up shit creek without a paddle what would be the point of presenting options. However I will try one but I rather think Krugman will delete this post because it contains an option worth discussing.

    whatever

Bernanke: start work now to curb budget deficit
White House estimates that the government will rack up an unprecedented $1.8 trillion budget deficit this year. That would be more than four times last year's all-time high
The U.S. has lost a net total of 5.7 million jobs since the recession began, meaning fewer payroll taxes are flowing into the funds.
Bernanke; the pace of the recovery will be slow and that unemployment -- now at a quarter-century peak of 8.9 percent -- will rise even after the recession ends.
    =============

Without returning government revenue to previous levels there is only one way to curb deficits, cut government spending by the same amount as lost revenue then multiply that be 10 to cover the stimulus.
And so the catastrophe conservatives warned about are coming into play.

I`d post this to krugman but it looks like he deleted my last comment.
